Investing Resources

Here is a collection of investing resources that I’ve assembled over the years.

CEFConnect is hosted by Nuveen Investments. It’s a fantastic resource for closed-end fund data. Some features require creating a free user account, which is ABSOLUTELY worth it if you’re researching CEFs.

Morningstar is the juggernaut of the fund investment websites/services. Their premium membership offers a heck of a lot of really helpful services, but you have to pay for it. Their free services are available without even creating a free user account, although it is helpful to create one so you can save portfolios and create watch lists for funds that you’re evaluating.

Here’s their homepage: http://www.morningstar.com/

Here’s their ETF Screener: http://screen.morningstar.com/screener_etf/etf_screener_version1.asp

Here’s their Fund Screener (Non-ETF): http://screen.morningstar.com/FundSelector.html

Bloomberg’s fund screener is the the most comprehensive and has the most specific classifications, in my view. It lacks the detail of Morningstar and CEFConnect, so I use it to find funds and then I drill down using the other sites. Here’s Bloomberg’s fund screener website: http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/data?pid=fundscreener

ETF Trends is a fantastic website. The breadth and depth of their content makes it applicable beyond just ETF investing because they cover so many topics, strategies, and asset classes.

Here’s a link to the Heritage Foundation’s Index of Economic Freedom. Because they list nearly every country and offer additional detail about their macroeconomic situation, it can be very helpful when examining international investment opportunities. If you’re not a global macro investment professional, it’s really helpful to be able to start at the highest level and then dig deeper. Check it out. Try picking a random country and examining the data they present.

Investimonials is a relatively new website, but I can tell that it’s gonna be a winner. Basically, they’ve categorized various investment resources/blogs/services/books based on popularity and reviews. The site makes it very easy to find specific websites that address particular investment topics or styles that interest you.

Newratings.com is another new website that I think is a fantastic resource for non-professional investors. It provides extremely current updates about sell-side investment research changes. I’m not endorsing sell-side research here, I’m just saying this site is a great tool you can use to stay on top of sell-side changes.

247 Wall St is a great site for general finance and investing news. They have quick and frequent updates and a bit of commentary. It’s exactly the sort of site that you want in your RSS reader because they don’t put out too much content, but what they do put out is worth perusing to see if you find something interesting.

Wall Street Folly is a blog that’s similar to 247 Wall St except that it’s geared more towards finance industry news. Their perspective is “inside looking in” so it’s probably most helpful for finance professionals. That said, it’s really entertaining.

Bespoke Investment Group has a TON of free information available via their daily blog posts. They’re a legit financial and investing services provider, and their analysis and commentary is sophisticated and data-driven. Adding their RSS feed to my reader was one of the smartest things I’ve done.
